Michele MECATTI

Michele Mecatti was born in Naples on 7 january 1964. In 1982, after obtaining his General Certificate of Education, He enrolled at the International School of Violin-Making in Cremona. In 1986 he has awarded a diploma under the guidance of Vincenzo Bissolotti. He moved to France in 1988 to improve his knowledge of restoration, working in Rue de Rome in Paris with Pierre Barthel and Bernard Sabatier until 1990. In 1990, still in Paris, he completed an apprenticeship in the maintenance and restoration of bows at the Jean and Pierre Grunberger's workshop. He remained in France until 1997, first working on his own between 1991 and 1994, and then in partnership with Antoine Laulhère and Giovanna Chittò between 1994 and 1997. During 1997 he worked for the Musée de la Musique of Paris carryng out several pieces of restoration work. In 1998, he moved to Florence and opened a workshop in partnership with Paolo Sorgentone. Since 2002 he teaches violin-making at the international courses in musical specialisation organised in Lucca by the Scuola di Musica Sinfonia . In addition to making new instruments and copies, he is involved in restoration, the maintenance of bows and business activities. He is member of Scientific Committee and coordinator of the book “Violin-making in Tuscany – Violin-makers of 20 th century”. His inspiration is taken from various violin-makers of the past, in particular Nicola Gagliano, Pietro Guarneri di Mantova and the brothers A. And G. Amati.
